Maverick
2005~2021
On April 14th, 2021, I had to say a heartbreaking goodbye to my best friend. At the impressive age of 16, Maverick’s quality of life began to deteriorate significantly over the last week. We decided to let him cross the Rainbow Bridge this morning at home after a full breakfast of bacon.
Adopting Maverick was one of the most impromptu and impulsive decisions I have ever made. I was working at PetSmart when I groomed a little terror of a black and white dog who quickly stole my heart with his unique look. When I went to return him to his owner, I was told he would be surrendered to the Ottawa Humane Society that night. I couldn’t let this pup go to a shelter, so instead, I gave them my number and my address. 10-year-old Maverick became part of the family on January 30th, 2016.
Although I was his fifth home, Maverick had no training except house training (phew). A little dog who was possessive over toys and treats became the most sensitive, sharing pup as soon as you kissed him on the nose (not a recommended training technique ). He became one of the best-behaved dogs I ever knew. He loved everyone from strangers to other dogs and cats. There wasn’t anyone that Maverick didn’t get along with.
As the years passed and Maverick began to experience signs of dementia, he impressed us all with his clever abilities to get trapped in unique places. But no matter how confused he got, he always had a smiley face and wagging tail to greet his people.
Maverick was my first dog outside of my family home. He went through three moves with me, two school programs, a pandemic, different jobs, and multiple relationships with friends and partners. Through all the change and unpredictability of the last six years, Maverick was my constant rock and support. The gift of his love is one I can never hope to repay, but I tried my best to come close.
I hope you’re at peace now, Mavy, and back playing with Ranger, Mitsie, and Clover over the Rainbow Bridge. Until we meet again sweet boy… You’ll always have a piece of my heart.
